If you are flying with others, it suggest a desire for social connections or teamwork, expresses how you are doing in you compare to others.

The next stage though was to extend my height, and this took enormous effort of will and body. I made active swimming motions and climbed, but only held altitude with great and constant concentration. With further practice still, this clumsy mode of flying was left behind as I leamt to use pure motivation or will to lift me into the air and carry me easily and gracefully wherever I wished. At this stage my flying was swift, mobile and without struggle’ (Jason V).
The example illustrates how much will, effort and learning can be involved in flying in dreams. This aspect of flying connects with the gaining of independence and the expression of one’s potential. We are all born into a certain paradigm or ‘reality’. At one time, part of the ‘reality’ for most Britons was that anyone without a white skin was a heathen or savage. At other times the reality’ has been that anything heavier than air could not fly. Meteors did not exist because theory discounted them. And so on.
To break free of such paradigms and from the gravity’ or hold our parental and social authority has on us to find a measure of emotional and intellectual freedom, takes the son of will, effort and learning depicted.
Flying expresses also the dealing with our internal influences which hold us down, such as self doubt, anxiety, depression.
Example: ‘I was flying. I felt nervous at first that I would fall down, but not afraid. I soon became confident and felt very happy and wanted the sensation to continue. I was lying over a building, could have been a small church, crematorium or graveyard but did not feel afraid or upset. When I woke I lay in bed and tried very hard to keep the feelings with me and, for reasons unknown, I do not wish to forget it’ (Mrs SM). In flying, Mrs SM is finding a way to look at death—the graveyard—which gives her a different viewpoint, a different feeling reaction to it, and she doesn’t want to lose that precious newly learnt view. In their maturing process some peo- pie learn to see their thoughts and emotions as things they expenence rather than things they are, and this brings the sort of new viewpoint seen in the example.
Example: ‘I was in a building with a group of people. I was being chased and suddenly flew up in the air to escape my pursuers’ (Michael O). Learning independence, and the ability to make decisions despite what others feel, may be done by ignoring our own feelings. This may be achieved by always keeping busy; never having quiet moments alone; filling empty periods with entertainment or company; smoking, drinking alcohol, taking sedatives or tranquillisers; ngid positive thinking. Then, as Michael does in his dream, we fly from issues we are pursued by instead of resolving them. This may lead us to the extremes of being either rigidly materialistic, or as rigidly ethereal. In either case we lose contact with everyday human issues, and may begin to have the escape-type flying dream, or an out of body experience.
Example: 41 knew I could fly. I picked up one of the young women I felt love for and flew with her.’ Laughingly I felt like superman, and flew easily’ (Simon W). Flying alone occurs most frequently, showing the independent aspect of flying. But because it often involves our positive feelings of pleasure, flying may depict our sexuality, as above, especially aspects of it expressing freedom from social norms and restraints.
Example: ‘I was floating atop a tree near houses and a rising walkway. I was saying to people around the tree that I had found something wonderful. Reaching out my hand I told them they could join me if they accepted this possibility in themselves. Some thought it was a publicity campaign, but were enjoying the spectacle.
A few reached out and were immediately with me, until there were about six of us, men and women. We joined hands, experiencing a most amazing sense of well-being. Then we slowly and effortlessly flew to a great height, leaving a trail of coloured smoke which could be seen for miles. It was to demonstrate the triumph of the human spirit. We then descended and were going somewhere else to show others’ (Margareta H). Transcendence is also depicted by flying.
The tree is Margareta’s personal life. She is at the growing tip, transcending, leaving behind her past. Being high in flight, on a hill or mountain also represents the action of seeing our life as a whole, having a sense of our overall direction and destiny, our essential self. This frequently gives rise to the drive to give of one’s best to others, as Margareta does in leaving behind a sign—the spire of colour.
Some researchers believe flying dreams often precede lucid dreams.
See lucid dreams; out of body experience.

It is a dream from which you leave with optimism and renewed strength, with a stimulating sensation of liberty. It also indicated the need to discover, to invent, and to do new things. This type of image foretells success, the completion of objections and overcoming difficulties, and encourages the dreamer to action (it is the time to fly by one’s self). However, you should not forget the Greek myth from Icarus; he who tried to go too high, his ambition brought him to a fatal destination. Further, if the protagonist is a young woman, it announces the break from relations in her couple.
In antiquity, if a person dreamt of flying, it was considered that he had entered into the sphere of the immortal gods. The Native Americans, the Babylonians, the Hindus, the Tibetan Buddhists, and many other peoples believed that the world had the ability to abandon the physical body during sleep. During these astral voyages, the psychic body could fly to other dimensions, communicate with people of a certain spiritual belief or learn of the souls that once were angels and divinities. Some scientists believe that these voyages are factual and that there exists the possibility to verify them empirically.

analysis of a dream

Montse dreamed: “I discovered with astonishment that I could fly. I just had to move three steps ahead and push myself a little forward; I didn’t even have to swing my arms. The wind marked my direction and I was able to feel the incredible sensation, I felt happy, free, powerful... Around me there were no birds, nor sounds; I was on my own in the immensity of the blue sky, flying over a sea in calm blue, yet brighter. Suddenly, I saw a group of dolphins jumping joyfully over silver waves. I awoke smiling, with a very pleasant sensation.”
Dreaming that you are flying is associated with liberty, the desire to elevate yourself from the earthly bindings and conquer the heaviness of reality.
It is a dream of evolution, which reveals you need to freely express yourself, to create... Montse, by profession a designer, had this dream a few days before completing a design for an important magazine, very artistic and vanguardist, renowned with many awards... A few days before she had felt very pressured and tired; however, her dream calmed her and revealed her creative capacity and her strength of expression. Dolphins are a symbol of intelligence that s related to clarity and purity of thought. The face that there were jumping through the water (entering and leaving) indicated the level of connection Montse had established between her conscious and subconscious.
Dreams of flights also match an interest in spiritual evolution. Curiously, through this period, Montse had given some tries in this direction, with courses on growth and personal overcoming, in which she learned much about herself.
(2) Flying may symbolize liberation — for example, getting rid of (self- imposed) shackles or irrational taboos stemming from childhood experiences.
(3) Flying may symbolize over-reaching yourself. In this case, your dream is probably warning you against projects that are too grandiose or not in accord with your fundamental constitution. This may mean that, in entertaining wild fantasies, you have actually overlooked your real capacities and gifts (remember Icarus!).
See also Falling, section (1).
(4) Sky may symbolize consciousness, intellect, spirituality. A dream of flying may therefore mean cither that you should extend the range of your consciousness (e.g. by bringing up unconscious contents into your conscious mind, or taking a less wordly view of life) or that you should give your previously neglected instinctual, intuitional or feeling functions a fuller role in your conscious life. The latter would be more likely to apply if you are an intellectual and if the dream includes some fear of falling.
(5) Are you looking at the world below in a detached, uninvolved, unemotional way, so that your problems dissolve, or your values undergo radical transformation? If so, the message is clear.
(6) Since sky is an age-old symbol of God or transcendence, flying may be a symbol of coming closer to your authentic or true self, or to the meaning of (vour) life.
See also God(dess).
(7) If you dream of flying fish, or a dolphin shooting out of the water, the meaning is probably that something in your unconscious wants to penetrate your conscious mind and / or to be allowed its proper place in your conscious life.
If you dream of a pig (or an elephant, say) flying, this may mean some despised and rejected ‘animal’ part of you is now - or, much more likely, needs to be - integrated into your conscious life.
(8) For flying saucers, see UFOs; or, if the saucers are flying in the kitchen, see Fight(ing).
The dream may also be a challenge for either being too earthbound or taking flight into a greater dimension.
In Egypt, dreams of flying were interpreted as fleeing from difficulties. In ancient Greece and Rome, dreams of flying were seen as passionate love.
According to Freud, they were dreams of sexual desire and erection (Freud dealt with this extensively). He saw dreams of flying exclusively as desire for sex. Some modern dream experts interpret flying dreams exclusively as a desire to get away from problematic sit- uations, or to cross one’s own boundaries. Some researchers believe that in our dreams we go back to preborn states, make contact with the state of birds, and realize our innate ability to fly. Another contemporary dream researcher, Jack Maguire, believes that most dreams about flying are just a sign that we want to recuperate and refresh ourselves.
To fly low, almost to the ground, indicates sickness and uneasy states from which the dreamer will recover.
To fly over muddy water, warns you to keep close with your private affairs, as enemies are watching to enthrall you.
To fly over broken places, signifies ill luck and gloomy surroundings.
If you notice green trees and vegetation below you in flying, you will suffer temporary embarrassment, but will have a flood of prosperity upon you.
To dream of seeing the sun while flying, signifies useless worries, as your affairs will succeed despite your fears of evil.
To dream of flying through the firmament passing the moon and other planets; foretells famine, wars, and troubles of all kinds.
To dream that you fly with black wings, portends bitter disappointments.
To fall while flying, signifies your downfall.
If you wake while falling, you will succeed in reinstating yourself.
For a young man to dream that he is flying with white wings above green foliage, foretells advancement in business, and he will also be successful in love.
If he dreams this often it is a sign of increasing prosperity and the fulfilment of desires.
If the trees appear barren or dead, there will be obstacles to combat in obtaining desires. He will get along, but his work will bring small results.
For a woman to dream of flying from one city to another, and alighting on church spires, foretells she will have much to contend against in the way of false persuasions and declarations of love. She will be threatened with a disastrous season of ill health, and the death of some one near to her may follow.
For a young woman to dream that she is shot at while flying, denotes enemies will endeavor to restrain her advancement into higher spheres of usefulness and prosperity.
Flying dreams and the ability to control your flight can be representative of your own personal sense of power.
If you are flying with ease, and enjoying the scene and landscape below, then it suggests that you are on top of a situation.
You have risen above something. It may also mean that you have gained a different perspective on things. Having difficulties staying in flight indicates a lack of power in controlling your own circumstances. You may be struggling to stay aloft, and stay on course. Things like birds, trees or telephone poles may further obstruct your flight. These obstructions represent a particular obstacle or person standing in your way in your waking life. You need to identify who, or what, is preventing you from moving forward.
If you are feeling fear when you are flying or feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success. Are you trying to rise above something in waking life? Are you developing an idea? Are you flying in the face of fortune? Flying into a rage? Flying off the handle? Flying high?
Dreaming Lens: Did you attempt to fly in the dream, or were you flying effortlessly through the air? Did you jump off after several steps or did you simply lift off? Where did you fly to, or from? Were you alone? Were you with others? What were you flying over? Were you joyful, or fearful?
Personal Focus: This is one of the most common universal dream images. One of the most delightful aspects of dreaming, this cross-cultural symbol means that you are rising above everything that is on the ground. Since this can be a wonderful sensation, it is often associated with intense feelings of a positive nature. A flying dream could indicate strong feelings of freedom and bliss, which can represent moving toward a higher state of awareness or connection with spirit. It can also provide a broader perspective on your life by virtue of giving you a higher vantage point.
However, it should not be overlooked that this very experience can be used as a defense by the unconscious. When this dream appears, it begs the following question: Is there anything that is being avoided or overlooked by rising above the conflict or simply not being grounded in reality?
Liberation or freedom. Overcoming a difficult situation and transcending limitations.
If you fly alone, this represents a personal journey filled with positive realizations.
If flying with others, this indicates the support of family, friends, or acquaintances, especially for a new endeavor.
An Out of Body Experience (OBE): Esoterically, flying through the air is sometimes interpreted as an OBE. Christian figures like Elisha and St. Anthony were believed to have this ability.
The ancient Egyptians called the astral body the ba, and in Germany the astral figure was sometimes likened to a doppelganger. No
matter the name, the purpose of such travel is to edify and educate the spirit, or potentially aid someone that you could not reach by normal means (see Bed).
With wings: If you have the wings of a bird when flying, check mythical or folkloric information on that bird for possible clues to your dream’s meaning.
For example, having the wings of a dove reveals nonviolent intentions or resolutions.
Wishful thinking (e.g., “flights of fancy”).
Vision: Enjoying the flight means past events or situations have been successfully dealt with. Feeling anxious or pursued by something or someone could be a sign of physical illness (have your heart and circulatory system checked!). Flying high above other people: you have “high-flying” plans that you cannot always carry out. Flying low above the ground means playing it safe in life. Flying over land and oceans means you want total freedom.
If you are married, it may mean you want a divorce.
Depth Psychology: Flying has many different meanings: sexual cravings, a better understanding about the past and insight into the future, or a wish to be lifted above the “demeaning” aspects of everyday life. Flying always is an uncertain undertaking because you are leaving the “ground” of reality. Hopefully, you will not fall back down to earth too harshly!
When this dream appears, it begs the following question:
Is there anything that is being avoided or overlooked by rising above the conflict or simply not being grounded in reality?
Freedom from the limitations of your own mental, emotional, and physical challenges (or a wish for such).
Spiritual transcendence or self-realization.
An opportunity to connect with your inner joy or love.
A higher perspective or understanding.
Greater insight into the world around you.
Using your abilities well, or to your advantage.
A pilot can represent someone in your real life whom you’ve allowed to guide you or influence your life direction.
Piloting an airplane (or other vehicle) can represent the way you’re “running your life” or handling your responsibilities (for example, flying well could represent feeling that you’re doing well in life, while crashing could represent difficulty handling things or a fear of trouble).

If you are feeling fear when you are flying or that you feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success. Also see “Broom/Broomstick” and “Airplane.”
An alternative interpretation suggests you’ve managed to rise above something that has been bothering you. You’re free of worry and able to move onwards and upwards. If you’ve grown wings to help you fly, this suggests a period of spiritual growth. You will learn much about yourself and reach new heights of wisdom and understanding.
If you fly high with black wings you are warned that you are headed for a let down. Flying dreams are normally a good omen and if the flight is pleasant, with no worries and anxieties, you can look for happiness and plenty to follow.
If you successfully maintained your flight at a low to medium height, you can expect to achieve your goal without much difficulty.
If you were trying (or straining) to reach a high altitude, the dream is telling you that your grasp is greater than your reach and you would be wise to alter your course.

Dream: Flying dreams often begin with the sensation of floating. As you realize that the force of gravity is no longer weighing you down, you soar into the sky and begin to fly through the air. You seem to steer by just imagining the direction you want to go in and you have a tremendous feeling of exhilaration. Sometimes you may be flying on your own, like a superhero, and at other times you may be in an aircraft or unusual vehicle. In some flying dreams you may feel like a passenger but you feel most liberated when you are controlling your flight path.
Meaning: When you dream of flying, you feel as if you are being released from some limitation or obligation in your waking life. Much of our language around our obligations involves metaphors that are based on weight. We speak of the ‘gravity of the situation’ or ‘a weighty decision’ and when we are released from a heavy responsibility we often describe it as ‘walking on air’. The flying dream reflects this sense of liberation and shows you have been released from circumstances that were weighing you down in some way. The removal of this burden frees you up to make your choices and act on them without any constraints, giving you the feeling of flying ‘free as a bird’, swooping and soaring without limitation. This freedom of choice often occurs during the creative process when you are expressing your unique talents as you transcend mere practicalities and procedures, raising your game far beyond them. If you find it difficult to get off the ground or encounter obstacles in your flying dreams, it usually suggests there is a situation that you are still too attached to in your daily life. When you find yourself flying an unusual vehicle, this shows you have a unique skill that gives you a great sense of liberation when you use it. Being a passenger indicates you are currently in a situation that gives you some freedom but not as much as if you were in charge of taking your own direction.
Action: This dream reflects how you are releasing yourself from limitations in your waking life and feeling more liberated than usual. Although you may regard this feeling of liberation as just luck or coincidence, it is usually because you have managed to create an opportunity for yourself. It can be worthwhile to consider other opportunities and chances in your daily life where you can take yourself off into the realms of new possibilities. To sustain your flying dreams, try to avoid airy-fairy thinking and ensure you have a solid platform for launching your ideas and a safe and appropriate place to land them.
Background: Although we have only been able to experience powered flight since the early 20th century, the sky has been linked to the powers of our imaginations for tens of thousands of years. We can’t see the top of our heads without a mirror and this can often give the feeling that our heads and our soaring imaginings are open to the wide blue yonder above. The sky has come to represent how the human imagination is one of the most powerful gifts we possess. In most religions and mythical cultures, the most powerful deity is the one who rules the sky.
