(in the sense of a house fire or forest fire)

To dream of a fire is evidence that your current situation is reaching a dangerous limit. The image of a house or forest burning indicates that you should destroy memories, prejudices, and all that is a hindrance to your progress and renewal.

If the flames threaten you, you will have to face a problem or project; but if they burn you, you are wasting or using your energy and effort in vain. To enter the flames without burning manifests resolve and the ability to overcome obstacles, such as a burning desire to reach a goal. (See FIRE)

FIRE - analysis of the dream

Laura dreamed: “I was on my bed surrounded by flames. The fire was all over my bedroom devastating everything, burning all of my belongings... but I was not able to move, I was paralyzed by fear. Suddenly, I noticed that the fire was not hurting me, the flames caressed my skin without burning me. That made me smile and I thought: ‘My skin is like an asbestos suit. I am fireproof.’ I left my bedroom by walking through the flames, whistling, convinced of being endowed with a magical power against fire.”

Dreaming of fire may indicate that your reserves of both energy and enthusiasm are in crisis. You might be facing a situation that puts you to the test in real life.

If the dream’s fire is well received, it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your difficulties. When Laura had this dream she was going through a difficult domestic situation: her daughter had just been born, she had to take care of her mother who had a broken femur, and she was about to get seriously depressed. Fire was encouraging her to be more optimistic and energetic. The uncontrollable fire was telling Laura to act with precaution and a more relaxed attitude.

A dream in which you end up being safe and sound after an encounter with fire, like the phoenix, indicates growth in the face of difficulties. The unconscious was trying to calm Laura by reminding her of her courage and ability to overcome life’s setbacks. She managed to get her mother—who was in wheelchair—to help with the baby’s care. This new responsibility made Laura’s mother feel useful, despite her injury, forgetting her incipient depression.

Fire

Dreaming of fire indicates that your enthusiasm and energy reserves are in crisis. Maybe in real life you are facing a situation that puts you to the test; if the fire warms you and is well received, maybe it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your problems. The presence of fire in dreams may well be an incentive to continue along the path taken.

If you are lighting a fire it may be an indication that you must begin a project. To move in flames without burning denotes strength and ability to overcome obstacles, a burning desire to reach the goal. Finally, if you dream that a forest or a house burns down your situation is reaching a dangerous limit. (See FIREPLACE, BURNS, RED, and BLOWING) Jung said that fire represents the process of psychological change. Alchemists used fire to transform the simple metal into gold, so it is a symbol of inner transformation. This element can purge corruption from the past, provide light, and reveal spiritual truth.

It is the eternal flame in the temple of the soul.

In dreams, fire reflects your feelings of love and hate, the forces of creation and destruction. Thus, a small well lit fire indicates desire for a lasting love or friendship. In addition, it predicts success, health, and happiness. A fire that produces too much smoke, however, announces betrayals and conflicts.

If the flames are threatening you, it represents fear of facing a problem or project; if it swelters you are wasting or misusing your energy and efforts.

Dr. Michael Lennox Interpretation

Universal Landscape: Powerful transformation that is rapid and complete.

Dreaming Lens: Were you witnessing a fire? Were you starting a fire, or attempting to put one out? Was the fire manageable and pleasant, or raging out of control? Were you burning, or in danger of being burned? Were you present for the fire, or just the aftermath? What color was the flame? What was being burned?

Personal Focus: Fire is the combustion of some material undergoing a radical increase in temperature that results in a rapid restructuring of its molecular structure. If the material that is burning is organic in nature, the residual compound that remains is carbon, the basic foundation for all life on our planet. This is what makes fire such a powerful symbol for transformation and change. That which has been burned is transmuted back into the substance that is the underlying material from which anything can be created anew.

There can be many different colors present with fire and these can be explored in your interpretation process. Red flames can represent passion, frustration, or aggression, as well as issues of security. Orange connects to sexuality; yellow to emotions; green to healing; and blue to communication issues. Indigo relates to instincts and intuition and violet means that spirituality is the focus of the shift. (See Colors for more on this.)

What is burning is likely the most important focus of your investigation. If it is something you are familiar with, it may indicate that a major transformation is occurring in your life in the arena represented by that thing. A house on fire connects to a transformation in your personal identity. A public building relates more to your social identity. An object that you possess could be explored and the meaning you associate with it can be combined with the idea of radical change in that area. A fire in nature might point to a loss of resources, nurturing, or creativity. If someone dies in a fire, that Character Aspect will inform you of what part of yourself is being sacrificed in order for a new sense of self to emerge.

The size of the fire and your emotional response to it will illuminate issues of overwhelm and loss of control. A large fire that is out of control could indicate broad-based changes are underway, which will result in a total dissolution of the old landscape of your life. A contained fire could indicate the change will be manageable, or even intentional. An outdoor campfire could represent your ability to create powerful change out of limited resources. A fireplace or woodburning stove often relates to harnessing change to your benefit or pleasure.

While fire is dangerous and violent, it has the power to purify and create space for renewal and new growth. When it appears in a dream, be aware that great change is afoot and that the future is likely to bring new life and new possibility.

Patrica Telesco Interpretation

(see Baking, Candle, Disaster, Forge, Hearth, Hell, Red, Sun, Torch)

A predominantly masculine symbol associated with the sun and intense passion. Native Americans additionally believe the condition of the fire appearing in the dream reflects your emotional nature. Is it burning out of control—or neatly tended?

Goodness over evil. Fire illuminates the darkness and chases away frightening shadows. Upon what areas of your life does this light shine?

Drastic transformation. This is the flight of the phoenix who must die in a nest of flame to be renewed.

Emotional devastation or a burning obsession. Look to see what exactly you perceive as burning.

Awareness and vision. Besides shedding light, fire was used as a divinatory tool in cultures ranging from ancient Greece to Tibet. Known as pyromancy, seers would stare at a flame source, watching for symbolic images to appear in answer to questions posed.

Elemental forces that must be tempered and controlled or they will destroy instead of empower.

Dramatics (being full of “flash and fanfare”).

Squelching: Ignoring or turning your back on the masculine nature, or resentment toward men. Alternatively, having a source of personal energy taken away.

Walking through a fire: Your reactions in the dream to this experience indicate how you are coping with a particularly heated situation.

Sitting amidst a fire: Being on the proverbial “hot seat.” Alternatively, a type of death dream in which the fire relates to the ancient pyres upon which bodies were burned to release the spirit.

Campfires: Simple pleasures, reveling in nature, remembering stories and experiences from youth (see Fables, Storytellers).

What’s burning here can be vitally important to your dream’s meaning.

For example, seeing a building on fire might indicate that you’re burning up your body’s resources / energy.

An attic fire can reveal someone whose mind is totally consumed by one topic.

Dreaming of burning clothes symbolizes the desire to do away with societally designed images for a more honest self-representation.

Dreaming of a fire whose coals have grown cold is a very negative image. It represents trouble, despair, and possibly the loss of love among those people close to you due to a misunderstanding. Try to find a way to put a fresh warm ember into this situation.

Dr. Mıchael Lennox Interpretation

Things are changing in a dramatic way.

The combustion of fire destroys everything in its path. However, remember that fire reduces what it burns to carbon, the building block of all life. So while the destruction of fire is absolute, like all change, it is making way for something else to be created.

A small fire or spark may indicate that winds of change are approaching, whereas something raging out of control could be pointing to change and transformation that feels overwhelming and scary. Consider what is burning in the dream, and that will shed light on what a dream that features fire is reflecting. What is burning is likely the most important focus of your investigation.

If it is something you are familiar with, it may indicate that a major transformation is occurring in your life in the arena represented by that thing.

A house on fire connects to a transformation in your personal identity.

A building that is more public relates more to your social identity. An object that you possess could be explored and the meaning you associate with it combined with the idea of radical change in that area.

A fire in nature might point to a loss of resources, nurturing, or creativity.

If someone dies in a fire, that person’s character aspect will inform you of what part of yourself is being sacrificed in order for a new sense of self to emerge.

The size of the fire and your emotional response to it will illuminate issues of overwhelm and loss of control.

A large fire that is out of control could indicate broad-based changes that may be resulting in the total dissolution of the old landscape of your life.

A contained fire could indicate that the change may be manageable and possibly even intentional.

A campfire in the outdoors could represent your ability to create powerful change out of limited resources.

A fireplace or wood-burning stove relates to harnessing change for your benefit or pleasure. While fire is dangerous and violent, it has the power to purify and create the possibility of renewal and new growth. When it appears in a dream, be aware that great change is afoot and that the future is likely to bring new life and new possibility.

Theresa Cheung Interpretation

The elements often have important roles in disaster dreams. In a dream, fire can be a purifying influence, it can relate to anger, or it might be suggestive of destruction. It may also relate to the fact that you are being consumed by a passion in waking life. In any event, its appearance in your dream may suggest that something in your life (most likely related to work or home) is in the midst of considerable change. Such a dream may be a warning—especially if you are trying unsuccessfully to smother the flames. The dream would be reassuring if a house or room was catching fire and you could control the flames, for here is a symbol of controlled passion. The dream is reassuring you that you are, or can be, in control of your life.

Disaster dreams in which you see people engulfed in a burning building should make you consider both your reaction and your personal connection with the disaster—if any.

If you are merely a spectator in the dream, too scared to move or offer your help, you should ask yourself whether you are equally fearful of life, or whether you are less forceful than you need to be.

If any of your friends, colleagues or family members are trapped in the building and you know you should help them, your dream may be telling you to take a more active part in their lives.

If you dreamed that you were in the burning building or that the building was falling down around you, consider whether your life is also collapsing around you. To dream of being burned alive may express your fears of a new relationship or phase of life. Finally if you are fire-fighting in your dream, this is a positive sign as it shows you are putting up a fight in real life.

Eric Ackroyd Interpretation

(1) Fire may symbolize libido, passion. Poking a fire may therefore mean arousing passion, and may be a symbol of the sexual act.

(2) It may symbolize a fever, and the dream may actually have been caused by a feverish bodily condition.

(3) If the fire is destroying or threatening to destroy a house, the house will almost certainly represent yourself (or, in the case of (2) above, your body). The dream will usually mean there is some (repressed) emotion that is liable to burst out destructively if it is not given your conscious attention. The same would apply if the fire was a conflagration - for example, a forest fire - threatening you.

(4) Fire - which can change liquids and even some minerals into air - may symbolize purification and transformation. (The Hindu custom of burning the dead is a symbolic purging.) If, therefore, what is being burned in the dream can be seen as a symbol of yourself, the message will be about getting rid of whatever has been blocking the way to a fiiller realization of your true self.

What we think we are is usually all those habitual responses that have been conditioned by past events and experiences. What we really are is eternal - that is, not conditioned by the past. So, to find our true self we have to ‘bum5 the past. Fire, like floods, is a fertilizer, making new things possible by destroying the old.

(5) In some contexts fire may be equivalent to light and may symbolize spirituality, truth, (self-)knowledge. (This is the opposite of hell-fire, which has been described as burning without giving any light. For the fires of purgatory see (4) above.)

myjellybean Interpretation

Example: T was in a small terraced house with a friend I had known years earlier. It was her house, there were two or three children in it. Suddenly it caught fire, I wanted to stay and put the fire out but she did not. She dragged me outside and down the street. We saw the house burn down. I had this dream the day I got home from hospital, after undergoing a hysterectomy’ (Mrs G). Here the fire depicts the consuming feelings of loss regarding Mrs G’s childbearing function. Also the loss of an area or era of life. Underground flames: unconscious emotions or desires which one may need to face for real growth. Fire in the sky: great changes in viewpoint; meeting the next step in maturity.

Example: ‘I found quite a large old fireplace. I asked my husband if he would like a fire. I thought it would be cosy if we both enjoyed the fire together. Woke up with a warm feeling towards my husband; he reached out to me’ (Dinah Y). Here fire is not only homemaking and human warmth, but also sexuality. Fireplace: homeliness; the womb. Idioms: baptism of fire; between two fires; fire up; go through fire and water; play with fire; under fire; the old illness/love flared up.

Martha Clarke Interpretation

(See Flame.)

To dream that a house is on fire, signifies passion and loving companions.

If you dreamed of building a fire in a fireplace or at a campsite, you can expect an exciting romantic adventure.

The same is true is you dreamed of stirring a fire with a poker.

If you dreamed of setting fire to a house, building, or anything of value, you must learn to control your temper or be prepared for serious consequences.

(See Flame.)

To dream that a house is on fire, signifies passion and loving companions.

The same is true is you dreamed of stirring a fire with a poker.

If you dreamed of setting fire to a house, building, or anything of value, you must learn to control your temper or be prepared for serious consequences.

Tony Crisp Interpretation

Passion; sexuality, anger, desire; burning feelings such as resentment or frustration; our desire to destroy. Also our life process, often described as a flame which burns forever through different generations but leaves only ash behind, our vital energy; occasionally refers to physical illness.

Towers, Jacqueline Interpretation

If you are burned, this is an indication that trouble lies ahead. If you are unscathed, good news is on its way. A fire in a house or building denotes that you will be asked for urgent help from a friend or relation. Building or stoking a fire suggests that a thrilling romantic affair is coming. Putting out or escaping from a fire means that you will overcome all your difficulties.

Jean Boushahla Interpretation

at its worst, fire symbolizes uncontrolled temper, jealousy, vengeance, hatred, unbridled sensuality. Its opposites are the fires of love, spiritual zeal, patriotic fervor, patience and enthusiasm; in the Bible fire generally symbolizes cleansing and purification. The element associated with the third spiritual center (adrenals); immortality; creativity; warning of a fever. Smoldering fires resentment or anger, a need for spiritual cleansing (flame burns away human dross); house on fire— a trial through which all shall be made perfect; a cliché meaning to move fast; embers— possible death symbol; back of house on fire —hidden troublesome forces of resentment smoldering in the mind; fires of hell— cleansing and purification of the soul. "Too hot to handle"; "you burn me up"; "my old flame"; "the burning bush" (the Divine within that burns continuously, renewing and purifying, but does not consume); "the Phoenix rising from its own ashes" (reincarnation).

Jean Boushahla Interpretation

is present not only in the center of the earth and in the stars of heaven, but also in the heart of man. Fire purifies as well as destroys. God spoke to Moses from a burning bush, but the bush was unharmed. Fire and brimstone destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and cleansed the country of corruption. Constructively, symbols of fire are the fires of love, spiritual zeal, patriotic fervor, patience, and enthusiasm. It can be soft, warm, and comforting. Destructively, fire is symbolized in uncontrolled temper, jealousy, vengeance, hatred, and unbridled sensuality. In the earth it relates to volcanoes.

Belter Greg Interpretation

These are flames gone out of control causing a towering inferno. It’s not a future event unless there’s a house burning up. A very bad flaming temper doesn’t help either. Hell won’t exist for anyone so mark that one off. Be careful around the stove, irons and frying pans. Always check for things that might start a fire. God’s also fire but in a good light filled with feeling.

Marsha Trimble Dunstan Interpretation

Georg Fink Interpretation

Fire is an archetypal symbol for spirit and love. It is also a symbol for the libido, and thus for sensuality as well as an all-consuming, fierce passion. Jung saw fire as a symbol for cleansing or for getting rid of what is old and useless. At the hearth, fire allows us to be warm and comfortable. When the fire burns bright, either inside (the fireplace) or out, this means that something new is being created, or that ideas are being real- ized. Flames reaching high into the sky indicate that a burning problem is being solved. A fire that is being extinguished shows that some plans may be thwarted. Occasionally, a fire can turn into something that is dangerous. (See also “Putting Out a Fire.”) FIRE DEPARTMENT A dream about a fire that the fire department is putting out may mean that burgeoning wild passions are threatening to consume you. In a completely different interpretation, the jet of water from the fire hose could mean that the germs that threaten your body will be destroyed. (See also “Putting Out a Fire.”)

Ian Wallace Interpretation

Opportunity for a vital transformation that can illuminate my fundamental passions and heighten my developing creativity

Cathleen Connor Interpretation

Fire is a primal universal symbol, deeply embedded in the consciousness of all living beings. It represents rebirth, containing within itself the power of consumption and regeneration. Think about all the ways you use the imagery of fire in your daily life. If someone “lights a fire” under you, he is trying to get you going on something, but if someone “lights your fire” she ignites your passion. When you dream of fire — even the flame of a candle — you are being asked to come alive in some area of your life. Your subconscious is trying to connect you to that vital, primal energy of inspiration, life force, and passion. Fire is generally a favorable symbol, so long as you are not burned. Alternately, fire can symbolize destruction, purification, illumination, and a spiritual awakening. Look for other metaphors. What are you getting fired up about? Are you (or another figure in the dream) concerned about being fired or getting burned?

Mary Summer Interpretation

means extreme emotional intensity

Julia and Derek Parker Interpretation

Fire has been an enormously important symbol to almost every civilisation. But it is difficult to untangle the many allusions, for in different civilisations it has meant different things - death, to the Aztecs; wisdom, to Buddhists; knowledge, to the Hindus; the Holy Spirit, to Christians; anger, to the Chinese. Sometimes fire has represented purification (as it does scientifically); at other times its leaping flames have suggested the spirit leaping to meet God. One of the four basic elements, it seems psychologically to relate to our emotions and passions. If we channel our fiery emotions, they can work well for us, we can achieve much and get a great deal of satisfaction by expressing them in creative work. This can also apply to physical action and emotion, perhaps related to sexual passion. However, it is important to remember that fire can very easily get out of control, and that our fiery emotions should be controlled. We can be consumed by fiery passion, for our partner, for a cause or for power. Such fire can consume us. The old saying that fire is a good servant but a bad master is very relevant in this context. It is most likely that your drcam of fire relates to some powerful and emotionally charged feelings - perhaps a sexually charged passion for someone. Rather differently, maybe you are extremely angry about something in your waking life. Most importantly, you must consider your attitude to the fire and how you were responding to it. Were you fearful, enjoying a warm glow or trying desperately to extinguish the fire? Or perhaps you were encouraging the fire to burn more brightly, more strongly. The fire itself is another factor for consideration: did it crackle and spark unexpectedly? Was there ‘smoke without fire’? Were you in control of the situation, or did the fire consume you? If you were running away from the flames, are you afraid of your present feelings? Or are you trying to smother them?

Strong, Gerard Interpretation

This warns of problems that might arise in the vicinity of the dreamer.

Tony Crisp Interpretation

Passion; sexuality; anger; desire; burning feelings such as resentment or frustration; desire to destroy; the process of growth or change in us that radically alters old dependencies and viewpoints; an emergency or calamitous change; your life process, often described as a flame that burns forever through different generations but leaves only ash behind; your vital energy; occasionally refers to physical illness or a warning of it. The fireplace: homeyness; the womb. Underground flames: unconscious emotions or desires that one may need to face for real growth; illness that has not yet come to awareness yet. Fire in the sky: great changes in viewpoint; meeting the next step in maturity. Idioms: too hot to handle; you burn me up; old flame; the burning bush.

Common Source

Dreams about fire can be very symbolic, a powerful force that can lead to both personal transformation or destruction. You will have to determine if your dream is hinting at your inner light; the divine spark that illuminates in your soul. Rather than a destructive force driven by uncontrolled emotions leaving you in a catastrophic wake. Fire has been used as one of the four earth elements as well as creating live in the alchemical process. If your house is on fire connects to emotional damage whereas watching a fire in your fireplace brings you to the mind, body and spirit.
