FIRE - analysis of the dream
Laura dreamed: “I was on my bed surrounded by flames. The fire was all over my bedroom devastating everything, burning all of my belongings... but I was not able to move, I was paralyzed by fear. Suddenly, I noticed that the fire was not hurting me, the flames caressed my skin without burning me. That made me smile and I thought: ‘My skin is like an asbestos suit. I am fireproof.’ I left my bedroom by walking through the flames, whistling, convinced of being endowed with a magical power against fire.”
Dreaming of fire may indicate that your reserves of both energy and enthusiasm are in crisis. You might be facing a situation that puts you to the test in real life.
If the dream’s fire is well received, it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your difficulties. When Laura had this dream she was going through a difficult domestic situation: her daughter had just been born, she had to take care of her mother who had a broken femur, and she was about to get seriously depressed. Fire was encouraging her to be more optimistic and energetic. The uncontrollable fire was telling Laura to act with precaution and a more relaxed attitude.
A dream in which you end up being safe and sound after an encounter with fire, like the phoenix, indicates growth in the face of difficulties. The unconscious was trying to calm Laura by reminding her of her courage and ability to overcome life’s setbacks. She managed to get her mother—who was in wheelchair—to help with the baby’s care. This new responsibility made Laura’s mother feel useful, despite her injury, forgetting her incipient depression.
Fire
Dreaming of fire indicates that your enthusiasm and energy reserves are in crisis. Maybe in real life you are facing a situation that puts you to the test; if the fire warms you and is well received, maybe it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your problems. The presence of fire in dreams may well be an incentive to continue along the path taken.
If you are lighting a fire it may be an indication that you must begin a project. To move in flames without burning denotes strength and ability to overcome obstacles, a burning desire to reach the goal. Finally, if you dream that a forest or a house burns down your situation is reaching a dangerous limit. (See FIREPLACE, BURNS, RED, and BLOWING) Jung said that fire represents the process of psychological change. Alchemists used fire to transform the simple metal into gold, so it is a symbol of inner transformation. This element can purge corruption from the past, provide light, and reveal spiritual truth.
It is the eternal flame in the temple of the soul.
In dreams, fire reflects your feelings of love and hate, the forces of creation and destruction. Thus, a small well lit fire indicates desire for a lasting love or friendship. In addition, it predicts success, health, and happiness. A fire that produces too much smoke, however, announces betrayals and conflicts.
If the flames are threatening you, it represents fear of facing a problem or project; if it swelters you are wasting or misusing your energy and efforts.
Dreaming Lens: Were you witnessing a fire? Were you starting a fire, or attempting to put one out? Was the fire manageable and pleasant, or raging out of control? Were you burning, or in danger of being burned? Were you present for the fire, or just the aftermath? What color was the flame? What was being burned?
Personal Focus: Fire is the combustion of some material undergoing a radical increase in temperature that results in a rapid restructuring of its molecular structure. If the material that is burning is organic in nature, the residual compound that remains is carbon, the basic foundation for all life on our planet. This is what makes fire such a powerful symbol for transformation and change. That which has been burned is transmuted back into the substance that is the underlying material from which anything can be created anew.
There can be many different colors present with fire and these can be explored in your interpretation process. Red flames can represent passion, frustration, or aggression, as well as issues of security. Orange connects to sexuality; yellow to emotions; green to healing; and blue to communication issues. Indigo relates to instincts and intuition and violet means that spirituality is the focus of the shift. (See Colors for more on this.)
What is burning is likely the most important focus of your investigation. If it is something you are familiar with, it may indicate that a major transformation is occurring in your life in the arena represented by that thing. A house on fire connects to a transformation in your personal identity. A public building relates more to your social identity. An object that you possess could be explored and the meaning you associate with it can be combined with the idea of radical change in that area. A fire in nature might point to a loss of resources, nurturing, or creativity. If someone dies in a fire, that Character Aspect will inform you of what part of yourself is being sacrificed in order for a new sense of self to emerge.
The size of the fire and your emotional response to it will illuminate issues of overwhelm and loss of control. A large fire that is out of control could indicate broad-based changes are underway, which will result in a total dissolution of the old landscape of your life. A contained fire could indicate the change will be manageable, or even intentional. An outdoor campfire could represent your ability to create powerful change out of limited resources. A fireplace or woodburning stove often relates to harnessing change to your benefit or pleasure.
While fire is dangerous and violent, it has the power to purify and create space for renewal and new growth. When it appears in a dream, be aware that great change is afoot and that the future is likely to bring new life and new possibility.

A small fire or spark may indicate that winds of change are approaching, whereas something raging out of control could be pointing to change and transformation that feels overwhelming and scary.
A predominantly masculine symbol associated with the sun and intense passion. Native Americans additionally believe the condition of the fire appearing in the dream reflects your emotional nature. Is it burning out of control—or neatly tended?
Goodness over evil. Fire illuminates the darkness and chases away frightening shadows. Upon what areas of your life does this light shine?
Drastic transformation. This is the flight of the phoenix who must die in a nest of flame to be renewed.
Emotional devastation or a burning obsession. Look to see what exactly you perceive as burning.
Awareness and vision. Besides shedding light, fire was used as a divinatory tool in cultures ranging from ancient Greece to Tibet. Known as pyromancy, seers would stare at a flame source, watching for symbolic images to appear in answer to questions posed.
Elemental forces that must be tempered and controlled or they will destroy instead of empower.
Dramatics (being full of “flash and fanfare”).
Squelching: Ignoring or turning your back on the masculine nature, or resentment toward men. Alternatively, having a source of personal energy taken away.
Walking through a fire: Your reactions in the dream to this experience indicate how you are coping with a particularly heated situation.
Sitting amidst a fire: Being on the proverbial “hot seat.” Alternatively, a type of death dream in which the fire relates to the ancient pyres upon which bodies were burned to release the spirit.
Campfires: Simple pleasures, reveling in nature, remembering stories and experiences from youth (see Fables, Storytellers).
What’s burning here can be vitally important to your dream’s meaning.
For example, seeing a building on fire might indicate that you’re burning up your body’s resources / energy.
An attic fire can reveal someone whose mind is totally consumed by one topic.
Dreaming of burning clothes symbolizes the desire to do away with societally designed images for a more honest self-representation.
Dreaming of a fire whose coals have grown cold is a very negative image. It represents trouble, despair, and possibly the loss of love among those people close to you due to a misunderstanding. Try to find a way to put a fresh warm ember into this situation.
The combustion of fire destroys everything in its path. However, remember that fire reduces what it burns to carbon, the building block of all life. So while the destruction of fire is absolute, like all change, it is making way for something else to be created.
A small fire or spark may indicate that winds of change are approaching, whereas something raging out of control could be pointing to change and transformation that feels overwhelming and scary. Consider what is burning in the dream, and that will shed light on what a dream that features fire is reflecting. What is burning is likely the most important focus of your investigation.
If it is something you are familiar with, it may indicate that a major transformation is occurring in your life in the arena represented by that thing.
A house on fire connects to a transformation in your personal identity.
A building that is more public relates more to your social identity. An object that you possess could be explored and the meaning you associate with it combined with the idea of radical change in that area.
A fire in nature might point to a loss of resources, nurturing, or creativity.
If someone dies in a fire, that person’s character aspect will inform you of what part of yourself is being sacrificed in order for a new sense of self to emerge.
The size of the fire and your emotional response to it will illuminate issues of overwhelm and loss of control.
A large fire that is out of control could indicate broad-based changes that may be resulting in the total dissolution of the old landscape of your life.
A contained fire could indicate that the change may be manageable and possibly even intentional.
A campfire in the outdoors could represent your ability to create powerful change out of limited resources.
A fireplace or wood-burning stove relates to harnessing change for your benefit or pleasure. While fire is dangerous and violent, it has the power to purify and create the possibility of renewal and new growth. When it appears in a dream, be aware that great change is afoot and that the future is likely to bring new life and new possibility.
(See Flame.)
Disaster dreams in which you see people engulfed in a burning building should make you consider both your reaction and your personal connection with the disaster—if any.
If you are merely a spectator in the dream, too scared to move or offer your help, you should ask yourself whether you are equally fearful of life, or whether you are less forceful than you need to be.
If any of your friends, colleagues or family members are trapped in the building and you know you should help them, your dream may be telling you to take a more active part in their lives.
If you dreamed that you were in the burning building or that the building was falling down around you, consider whether your life is also collapsing around you. To dream of being burned alive may express your fears of a new relationship or phase of life. Finally if you are fire-fighting in your dream, this is a positive sign as it shows you are putting up a fight in real life.
(2) It may symbolize a fever, and the dream may actually have been caused by a feverish bodily condition.
(3) If the fire is destroying or threatening to destroy a house, the house will almost certainly represent yourself (or, in the case of (2) above, your body). The dream will usually mean there is some (repressed) emotion that is liable to burst out destructively if it is not given your conscious attention. The same would apply if the fire was a conflagration - for example, a forest fire - threatening you.
(4) Fire - which can change liquids and even some minerals into air - may symbolize purification and transformation. (The Hindu custom of burning the dead is a symbolic purging.) If, therefore, what is being burned in the dream can be seen as a symbol of yourself, the message will be about getting rid of whatever has been blocking the way to a fiiller realization of your true self.
What we think we are is usually all those habitual responses that have been conditioned by past events and experiences. What we really are is eternal - that is, not conditioned by the past. So, to find our true self we have to ‘bum5 the past. Fire, like floods, is a fertilizer, making new things possible by destroying the old.
(5) In some contexts fire may be equivalent to light and may symbolize spirituality, truth, (self-)knowledge. (This is the opposite of hell-fire, which has been described as burning without giving any light. For the fires of purgatory see (4) above.)

If the flames threaten you, you will have to face a problem or project; but if they burn you, you are wasting or using your energy and effort in vain. To enter the flames without burning manifests resolve and the ability to overcome obstacles, such as a burning desire to reach a goal. (See FIRE)
