Theresa Cheung Interpretation

The dog appears more often than any other animal in dreams. It represents your natural drives that, despite usually being well socialized, still have a tendency to revert back to their spontaneous or ‘wild’ state. This is particularly the case if the dog within is provoked or encouraged. Dogs can also represent those parts of yourself that you express spontaneously: your easy-flowing natural feelings; devotion, perhaps to a lover or child; fidelity and faithfulness. Like the cat, the dog can be a substitute baby for women, or represent an outlet for affection or caring. This is particularly true of dreams about puppies, which are a symbol of childlike playfulness or following someone about in a devoted way. In mythology, the dog has symbolized the guardian of the gates of death, or a messenger between the hidden and the visible worlds. The dog was also thought of as a guide or guardian of the hidden side of life.

If a dog appears in your dream, pay attention to whether it was aggressive or friendly. It is also important to consider what your waking feelings about dogs are, as this will have an influence on the interpretation of your dream.

If you love dogs and you enjoyed caring for or playing with your dog in your dream, then it may be a sign that you are in need of more fun and friendship in your real life. Alternatively, because dogs are traditionally thought to be loyal, dependable, faithful friends and protectors to humans, it may be that your unconscious was highlighting these qualities within yourself or a person you know. Perhaps you are longing to have a friend you can trust and on whom you can depend.

Dogs typically represent friends and companionship in dreams, so if you dreamed of taking out-of-control dogs for a walk with them all straining on a lead, perhaps you are finding it hard to fit into your current circle of friends; do you feel that you have little in common with them anymore? If your dog broke away from you or you dropped its lead in your dream, do you fear losing the trust or loyalty of your friends? If you are taking a dog for a walk and were holding the lead, this suggests that you might be restraining of your aggression towards a friend or someone else; if someone else is holding the lead, it may be that you are feeling attacked by someone you know.

If a dog was aggressive in your dream and you fear dogs in waking life, your unconscious may have been reflecting your waking fear. If, however, you love dogs in real life, such a dream may represent a friend who is about to turn on you in waking life—perhaps they already have.

The loud barking of a dream dog can signal the animal within you trying to break free. Perhaps you feel angry about someone or something and are close to exploding with rage; or is your bark worse than your bite? A dog barking happily shows that you are enjoying your social life. A friendly, happy dog shows that you have lots of good friends. A dog barking and snarling warns against enemies and if the dream dog is big and powerful, as well as friendly, it shows that you feel in need of a powerful protector.

If a dog bit you in your dream, could this suggest an ungrateful loved one or relative who is biting the hand that feeds? Since dogs are often associated with masculine energy, if you were attacked by a dream dog, such a dream might represent feelings about a man or a relationship with a man. The black dog figures quite frequently in people’s dream imagery. For some people it represents depression; for others, death.

If a dog appears in your dream you may also want to consider if your dreaming mind is speaking in puns. Do you feel ‘sick as a dog’ or are you ‘in the doghouse’, and so on? Although interpretations will vary, bear in mind that in general a dream of dogs usually has positive association.

Dr. Michael Lennox Interpretation

Universal Landscape: Boundless masculine energy.

Dreaming Lens: Was the dog known to you? Was it your own dog? Did it belong to someone else? If so, were they in the dream as well? Was the dog dangerous or loving? Was the dog connected to you by a leash, or was it free to move about on its own? Did the dog respond to your authority or resist it? Were there other dogs?

Personal Focus: In the case of the adage dog is man’s best friend, gender plays a significant role with regard to energy. Dogs are a masculine symbol whereas cats are the feminine version of domesticated animals. Both connect to unconditional love and people keep pets as an expression of this. Particular to dogs is an unbridled expression of enthusiasm as evidenced by the excitement they embody every time their human returns home.

How you personally react to dogs will play a significant factor in how to interpret a dream in which this image appears. Most people will fall into one of two categories: either you love dogs or fear them. First, consider the Universal Landscape of the symbol of a dog. Then factor in the Dreaming Lens to deepen your interpretation. The final step is to add the Personal Focus of love or fear and you will have an accurate interpretation.

There are undertones of meaning to this symbol that also connect to the masculine principle. Dogs are by nature dedicated to the person who cares for them. In this way, they represent loyalty and steadfastness. In the arena of socialization, they are very direct in how they evaluate another dog or a person that is new to them. Using their powerful sense of smell, they will sniff each other without hesitation and very quickly establish an order of dominance. This corresponds to the masculine principle of straightforwardness and confidence.

A dog in your dream connects to loyalty and love, which can indicate that issues of commitment and intimacy are being triggered by some event or circumstance. A positive dream experience could be pointing to places in your life that are sparking enthusiasm, or requiring you to become more enthusiastic and joyful. Frightening images involving dogs may be inviting you to investigate unconscious fears around love and connection. A rabid dog represents inner fears of danger that may befall you if you get to close to an intimate situation. An actual dog bite represents the misuse of kindness or consideration. An obedient dog may point to a sense of control in areas of friendship and trust.

Dogs can embody a variety of qualities, from the one that rescues a person in danger, to the harrowing attacker. They range in shape from something tiny enough to put in your pocket to large breeds that resemble small bears. The size and attributes of the dog in your dream will inform you of the scope of the unconscious notions being expressed.

Dr. Mıchael Lennox Interpretation

You are connecting to principles around unconditional love as expressed by the masculine principle. Dogs represent unbridled joy, constant affection, and enthusiastic loyalty.

A dog in your dream connects to your own capacity to remain constant in love and affection. Remember to consider what the dog in your dream is doing and add that to this idea of unconditional love and you will understand what this dream means.

The presence of a dog means a need to call this quality into your life, and this image being present in the dream indicates that the quality is readily available. Anything that inhibits this, such as a dog being injured, sick, lost, or challenged in any way, is pointing out your own inhibitions around being loving for love’s sake.

A dog in your dream connects to loyalty and love, which can indicate that issues of commitment and intimacy are being triggered by some event or circumstance.

A positive dream experience could be pointing to places in your life that are sparking enthusiasm or requiring you to become more enthusiastic and joyful. Frightening images involving dogs may be inviting you to investigate unconscious fears around love and connection.

A rabid dog represents inner fears of danger that may befall you if you get too close to an intimate situation. An actual dog bite represents the misuse of kindness or consideration. An obedient dog may point to a sense of control in areas of friendship and trust. Different types of dogs can embody a variety of qualities, from the dog that rescues a person in danger to the harrowing attacker. Being bitten by a dog reveals quarrels between friends or family members.

Zoroastrian: Sagacity, vigilance, and fidelity. Consider how the dog is treated and where it’s seen for more interpretive value.

The afterlife: In Babylon, Greece, and Persia, dogs attended aspects of the great Goddess to the underworld where human souls slept, awaiting their next incarnation. This close affinity to death is why dogs are often credited with the ability to see spirits.

The ability to sniff out honesty and good character. In the Tarot, dogs sit at death’s gate to be sure the soul is properly prepared. Similarly, Egyptian mythology speaks of Anubis, the jackal-headed god, waiting in the underworld to judge newcomers with his nose. This is why the Egyptians packed their mummies in sweet spices!

Klaus Vollmar Interpretation

The animalistic.

A symbol of instincts to be used and guided by conscience.

The dog may also appear as a guard to protect property and defend against attack. He may symbolize a true friend.

The dog is the closest creature that humans come to call “brother.” It may also represent part of the dreamer—for instance, the shadow.

The dog as a pet almost always points to our instinct or loss of instinct, particularly when it is a trained dog, which in this case does not imply cultivation, but rather the destruction of instincts.

The dog is also one who needs to inspect its environment, who looks for and finds information. In the Tarot the two images of “the Fool” and “the Dog” always appear together.

A vicious dog means envy and unscrupulousness. According to Jung, the dog is the undertaker who buries the Corpse.

The dog with its instincts is seen as aiding the process of dying and resurrection (like Anubis in ancient Egyptian mythology). According to Greek mythology, the dog from hell, Cerberus, stands on the border between life and death.

Also may point to fear of rejection—”dog” as an unattractive female.

Martha Clarke Interpretation

Throughout history, the dogs have helped man to hunt and drive their herds. They are the emblem of fidelity, friendship, and companionship. In addition, they show a good understanding of our nature. To dream of a dog may reflect the desire to feel loved and protected, to have someone to share life with. Depending on how the dog appears in the dream, however, changes the interpretation of its meaning. Do not forget that this is an animal that behaves aggressively if it does not know you or believes you are threatening the property it defends. In this case, you may be developing an internal conflict with your more instinctive side.

If dog pulls at the leash that ties it, it denotes that your emotions cannot take any more. Maybe you need to act out your anger about something that saddens you.

According to a dream oracle, this dream predicts ruin. In particular, tradition affirms that a gentle, happy, and well behaved dog is an omen of deception.

If the animal barks and bites, the dream is a sign of injuries, betrayals, and adversity.

Tony Crisp Interpretation

Easy expression of such aspects of ourself as aggression —maybe because dogs show their teeth easily—sexuality, friendship; our easy flowing natural feelings, devotion, perhaps to a lover or child.

For some people a dog was the only source of expressive love in their childhood, so may well depict this. Dor on lead: restrained or controlled urges.

The dog appears more often than other animals in dreams.

Example: I continue on my path, and suddenly the nettles disappear and the path is clear. Ahead the wall has curved round to face me, hut there is a gate in it, and I can see my dog waiting for me on the other side’ (Mrs MG). In the dream of this elderly woman the dog is leading the way through the experience of meeting death. Mythology has often shown the dog in this light, as an inner sense of knowing how to find transformation through death—or as the ravaging threat of death. Idioms: die like a dog; dirty dog; dog eared; dog eat dog, dog in the manger, gay dog; go to the dogs; let sleeping dogs lie; etc.

Stearn Robinson - Tom Corbett Interpretation

As a general rule dogs in a dream are a good omen and symbolize friends.

Of course the interpretation varies according to the action and other details but is fairly straightforward.

If the dog was friendly and affectionate, it signifies pleasure and happy times with friends; a fierce or snarling dog suggests disagreements or untrustworthy friends; and if it bit or attacked, you are being warned to look out for actual deceit or harmful trickery from someone you have trusted.

To hear a dog bark happily signifies pleasing social recognition, but if it barked fiercely, you are being warned of possible legal troubles, so don’t fiddle your taxes or park your car too close to a hydrant.

To see dogs fighting indicates that you may be called on to arbitrate in an argument between friends, in which case you must be extra tactful to avoid ending up the odd man out.

If the dog in your dream was an exceptionally large one, it signifies protection through a powerful friend.

Silvana Amar Interpretation

Dogs in dreams could symbolize a large variety of ideas and concepts, but mostly they are symbolic of the dreamer’s defensive structure and may represent personal boundary issues. Carefully consider all of the details and the mood in your dream. First, if you have a dog, it may be natural to dream about him. We become emotionally attached to our dogs and we dream about them just as we dream about anything else that is important to us. Otherwise, dogs could symbolize loyalty and hard work.

Dogs participate in the larger meaning of beasts or creatures, all of which can refer to our natural selves, in either the positive or negative sense of “animal.” Dogs, however, as some of the first domesticated animals, can refer to a wide variety of symbolic meanings, from going along with the “pack,” to hunting (dogs “sniff out” the quarry), to loyalty (“man’s best friend”), to abuse (“treated like a dog”), to exhaustion (“dog-tired”), to tenacity (“doggedness”). They may be man’s best friend, but if the animals snarling, be careful of him. That particular breed will more than likely be off his leash and wondering about outdoors. If his whereabouts is unknown, and you go out for a walk, be very still if he comes running up to you. The attack dog is a warning. If you hear him just barking it’s safe. Georg Fink Interpretation

The sexual implications of dogs in dreams are based on the sexual acts that they perform in public. Dreaming about being frightened of a dog, however, often only describes a bad conscience. A dog that is accompanying you indicates that your instincts are intact; a dog being chained or mishandled means that you unconsciously feel inferior. Large dogs accentuate the above; small dogs minimize it. The meaning of the saying “going to the dogs” can also play a role, but relies on additional symbols in the dream. Carrying a dog in your arms indicates that you have your urges under control. Seeing a dead dog means that something inside of you has died that needs to be resurrected. A dream about being bitten in the foot by a dog could point to your untamed passions, a fear of infection, or a fear of castration. Artemidorus believed the dreamer ought to be wary of swindlers if he sees a dog approaching with its tail wagging. Dogs that bark and bite in a dream may be a warning that somebody wants to do harm to you in real life. (See also “Barking Dog.”)

Cathleen Connor Interpretation

Dreaming of a dog can mean you're seeking companionship, affection, or loyalty. Dogs are beloved around the world. In animal companions, such as dogs and cats, you may see qualities that reflect ones you would like to have yourself. In your dream, notice how you interact with the dog. Is it friendly or wary? What color and breed is the dog? How do you feel with the dog? Most often, unless you are afraid of dogs, they symbolize friendship, unconditional love, and loyalty. If you are dreaming of dogs, you might see these qualities in yourself or another person. Or you might desire a romantic partner who has these qualities.

Julia and Derek Parker Interpretation

The most domesticated of all animals has from prehistory played an important part in the life of mankind. In general mythology it is associated with fidelity, watchfulness, nobility; it has guarded the gates to the Underworld and has attended the dead, has been the messenger of man as well as his friend (though sometimes associated, like the cat, with witehes, male and female). The Christians have seen the dog as the protector of the shepherd’s floek, therefore sometimes as symbolising priesthood. Jewish tradition saw the dog as impure and evil or even demonic. Your own feelings towards dogs should however be the starting-point for interpretation: does the dog represent yourself or someone else? Then think of common phrases: the dirty dog, the black dog (depression) or man’s best friend. Are you being ‘dog in the manger' in some respeet? Have you behaved badly? (Greek mythology saw dogs as impudent flatterers.) Were you ‘dog tired’ when you went to bed? Would you like to own a dog (wish-fulfilment?) Is your bark worse than your bite? Have you been bitching it up? Are you in conflict with some ‘biteh’?

Strong, Gerard Interpretation
